Veerle Goudswaard - Advocaat bij Stichting Dutch&Detained

Veerle Goudswaard advises Dutch nationals who are detained abroad. Veerle is a lawyer specialized in international criminal law, in particular in extradition and sentence transfers (WOTS). She also assists Dutch citizens at risk of receiving the death penalty. She focusses on Dutch citizens detained in the US. Veerle is the director of Dutch&Detained.

Veerle was sworn in as a lawyer in 2013 when she started working at NautaDutilh in the Fraud & White-Collar Crime department, specializing in dual-use regulations and economic sanctions law. Veerle then worked with Stapert Advocaten on Dutch criminal, extradition, and death penalty cases.

Veerle studied both in the United States and in the Netherlands. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice (BA) from Michigan State University in the United States. Subsequently, she studied Conflict Resolution and Governance (MSc) and (International) Criminal Law (LLB and LLM) at the University of Amsterdam. During her studies, Veerle played professional field hockey and did an internship at Böhler Advocaten (now Prakken d’Oliveira), where she participated in a rogatory commission to Rwanda.

Apart from her work as a lawyer, Veerle is a volunteer at Lawyers for Lawyers and advocates for the humane treatment of migrants in Europe.

Veerle speaks Dutch, English and has a proper understanding of Spanish.
